The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has disclosed that he inherited a debt of N8.9 billion when he assumed office.
Speaking in Abuja at the ongoing National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party, the former Kano State governor noted that the financial burden stemmed from expenses incurred during pre-election legal battles and various election cases. These legal engagements covered legislative, governorship, and presidential election disputes.
Ganduje stated, “The current NWC inherited debts and legal liabilities to the total tune of N8,987,874,663, arising from various legal engagements.”
Despite the financial challenge, he mentioned that the APC National Legal Adviser, Prof. Abdul Kareem Kana (SAN), has been making efforts to reduce the debt burden. However, he appealed to the NEC to intervene and provide necessary support.
“We still passionately appeal to the National Executive Committee to intervene accordingly,” he said.
The meeting was attended by President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, state governors, National Working Committee (NWC) members, and other party chieftains.
Ganduje was elected as the APC National Chairman on August 3, 2023, during the party’s 12th NEC meeting held at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. During the same meeting, Ajibola Basiru, a former Senate spokesman from Osun State, was also elected as the party’s National Secretary.
