The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has officially declared today, Saturday, March 1, 2025, as the first day of Ramadan 1446 AH. The announcement was made by the President-General of the council and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, following the sighting of the crescent moon on Friday, February 28.
In a video message released on Friday, the Sultan stated that reports of moon sightings from various regions were verified and accepted, confirming the commencement of Ramadan. He urged all Muslims to dedicate this holy month to prayers, seeking Allah’s blessings and guidance for the nation and its leaders.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has called on Muslims across the country to use Ramadan as a period to promote unity and peace within their communities. In a message to the Muslim faithful, the President noted the significance of the holy month, describing it as a time for deep reflection, devotion to Allah, and acts of kindness.
His statement read in part: “I congratulate the Muslim faithful in Nigeria and worldwide as we begin the sacred month of Ramadan. We are profoundly grateful to Almighty Allah for granting us the grace to witness the commencement of this holy month, a cornerstone of the Islamic faith. May this fasting and devotion period be marked by good health, spiritual fulfilment, and divine blessings.”
The President further noted that Ramadan is a time for spiritual rejuvenation, self-discipline, and empathy for the less privileged. He encouraged all Muslims to embrace the lessons of humility and selflessness while strengthening their relationships with both Allah and their fellow citizens.
President Tinubu also addressed the country’s economic situation, stating that the nation is witnessing positive changes due to his administration’s policies. He pointed out that Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) had improved in the last quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, he noted that the prices of essential food items have started to decrease, providing relief for many Nigerians, especially during Ramadan.
He assured citizens that efforts to stabilise the economy were yielding results, with the exchange rate improving and fuel prices declining. As the rainy season approaches, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to increasing agricultural productivity to ensure food security. He stated that the government would continue to support farmers through mechanisation and innovative farming techniques to boost production.
Concluding his message, the President urged all Nigerians to come together in prayer and action for the progress of the nation. He called for unity, peace, and continued efforts toward national development.
“In this sacred month, I call on all Nigerians to join hands in prayer and action for our beloved country’s continued growth and development. Let us fervently seek Allah’s guidance and protection for our nation, and let our words and deeds reflect our shared commitment to peace, unity, and progress,” he noted.
