Lagos Assembly Orders Workers to Work from Home Amid Leadership Crisis

The Lagos State House of Assembly has instructed all staff and legislative aides to work from home indefinitely due to the ongoing leadership crisis within the legislative body.

This directive was issued by the Acting Clerk of the Assembly, Babatunde Abubakar, through a memo addressed to all employees. The memo, titled “Amendment to Remote Work Schedule Arrangement,” notes that the decision was made to ensure the safety of workers and prevent any possible unrest caused by the leadership dispute.

“To this end, all categories of staff at the Assembly, LAHASCOM, and legislative aides are requested to work remotely from home until further notice,” the memo stated.

The new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, has assured workers of her commitment to their safety and a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

The crisis began on January 13, 2025, when 32 lawmakers voted to remove former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and ex-Clerk Olalekan Onafeko from office. Obasa was replaced by his former deputy, Meranda, who was sworn in as the new Speaker.

Tensions escalated when operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) sealed off the Assembly complex, preventing lawmakers from holding plenary. However, the lawmakers, under heavy tension, forced their way inside, conducted a session, and later adjourned indefinitely after passing a vote of confidence in Meranda.

Meanwhile, three Assembly staff members are currently facing trial for allegedly attacking DSS operatives during the confrontation.

Despite his removal, Obasa has refused to step down, calling the process unconstitutional. On February 27, 2025, he entered the Assembly complex with heavy security, took over the Speaker’s office, and resumed duty. His supporters have since gathered outside the Assembly, demanding his reinstatement.

In response, Obasa has taken legal action against Meranda, the Lagos Assembly, and 36 lawmakers, challenging his removal. The Ikeja Court has scheduled a hearing for March 7, 2025 to address the matter.
