Police Arrest Three Over Attack on NANS Members in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three individuals linked to the attack on members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area.

The attack took place on Sunday, February 23, while the students were on their way to Abuja for their annual convention. A distress call from one of the victims alerted the police, who quickly responded to the scene.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, noted in a statement on Tuesday that officers were able to restore calm and ensure the safety of the students. She stated that an immediate manhunt was launched to track down those responsible.

“Intelligence gathered revealed that this was not the first time NANS members had been targeted in the same community. Through intelligence-led policing, the special squad of the command successfully arrested three suspects linked to the incident,” she said.

Odunlami also noted that the Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, has assured NANS members of a thorough investigation to uncover all those involved. He also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and travelers across the state.

“The three suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation. The Police Command in Ondo State urges the public to remain law-abiding and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency,” she added.

Meanwhile, Comrade Owolewa Taiwo, the South-West Zonal Coordinator of NANS, thanked the police for their swift response and efforts in maintaining security. He also pledged NANS’ support in working with law enforcement to fight crime in the state.
