The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has filed a lawsuit against MultiChoice Nigeria Limited and its Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe.
The case stems from alleged violations of regulatory orders, interference with an ongoing investigation, and breaches of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.
The dispute began when FCCPC instructed MultiChoice Nigeria on February 27, 2025, to maintain its existing subscription fees for DStv and GOtv. The directive was issued to allow time for a proper review of the company’s planned price increase. However, despite the order, MultiChoice proceeded with its price adjustment on March 1, 2025.
Addressing the situation in Abuja, the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Ondaje Ijagwu, stated that MultiChoice acted in direct defiance of the Commission’s directive. This move has sparked criticism from Nigerian subscribers, many of whom have expressed frustration over rising costs. Reports indicate that MultiChoice has already lost 243,000 subscribers across its DStv and GOtv platforms due to the price hike.
