Bayern Munich secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday. Harry Kane was the star of the night, scoring twice, including a penalty that marked his 30th consecutive successful spot kick.
Bayern, who had struggled against Leverkusen under coach Xabi Alonso, dominated from start to finish at the Allianz Arena. The visitors, who have been one of the strongest teams in Germany this season, seemed overwhelmed under the bright lights.
The match got off to a quick start when Kane found the back of the net in the ninth minute. Michael Olise delivered a precise cross, and the England striker made no mistake, heading it past Leverkusen goalkeeper Matej Kovar.
Bayern doubled their lead early in the second half after a costly mistake from Kovar. Joshua Kimmich’s lofted pass slipped through the goalkeeper’s hands, landing perfectly for Jamal Musiala to tap in. Things got worse for Leverkusen minutes later when Nordi Mukiele was sent off for a second yellow card after a reckless challenge on Alphonso Davies.
With a man down, Leverkusen struggled to contain Bayern’s attack. Substitute Edmund Tapsoba fouled Kane in the box, leading to a penalty. After a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot, and Kane calmly converted, continuing his perfect record from the penalty mark since the 2022 World Cup.
Alonso, who had stressed the importance of discipline in European matches, was visibly frustrated as Bayern celebrated their dominant win. The result gives the German giants a strong advantage heading into the second leg, keeping their hopes alive of reaching the final, which will be played in their home stadium.
Leverkusen, who have already knocked Bayern out of the German Cup this season, now face a tough challenge in the return leg. Despite their strong domestic form, Alonso’s decision to leave striker Patrik Schick on the bench raised questions, as Leverkusen struggled to create clear chances.
Bayern’s victory also came despite losing their veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to injury, forcing 21-year-old Jonas Urbig to step in for his debut. However, Leverkusen failed to test the young keeper, allowing Bayern to cruise to victory.
