Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has strongly opposed her six-month suspension from the Nigerian Senate. She insists that she remains the legitimate representative of her constituents, despite the Senate’s decision.
In a statement reacting to her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed her displeasure, calling the action unfair and against the principles of justice.
“Against the culture of silence, intimidation, and victim-shaming, my unjust suspension from the Nigerian Senate invalidates the principles of natural justice, fairness, and equity.
“The illegal suspension does not withdraw my legitimacy as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I will continue to use my duly elected position to serve my constituents and country to the best of my ability till 2027 and beyond,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said.
The Senate announced Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension on Thursday, following allegations she made against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The senator had accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim that led to an investigation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.
After reviewing the matter, the committee recommended a six-month suspension, which the Senate approved.
As a result of the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan will not receive her salary, and her security details will be withdrawn. Additionally, she has been barred from entering the National Assembly premises during the suspension period.
