Chelsea secured a narrow 2-1 victory over FC Copenhagen in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League last-16 tie. Goals from Reece James and Enzo Fernandez put the Blues in control, but a late header from Gabriel Pereira kept the Danish side’s hopes alive.
Despite being favorites to win the tournament, Chelsea struggled to create chances in the first half. Enzo Maresca’s side managed just two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, failing to trouble Copenhagen’s defense. However, a bold triple substitution at halftime brought new energy to the team.
Just moments after the restart, Reece James fired a low shot into the bottom corner to give Chelsea the lead. The goal was a much-needed breakthrough for the visitors, who had looked sluggish before halftime.
Copenhagen nearly responded immediately when Viktor Claesson’s effort struck the post and bounced into the arms of Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. The hosts continued to push forward, but Chelsea soon doubled their lead. Enzo Fernandez, one of the halftime substitutes, delivered a brilliant strike into the top corner, putting the Premier League side in a strong position.
Maresca’s team appeared to be in control, but their defensive lapses allowed Copenhagen back into the game. In the 79th minute, defender Gabriel Pereira rose highest to head a free-kick past Sanchez, giving the home side a crucial goal ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s inconsistent performance was once again a concern. At times, they dominated possession and dictated play, but defensive errors and a lack of urgency in the first half showed the challenges they still face.
