Nigeria on Right Path Under Tinubu, Presidency Replies Catholic Bishops

The Nigerian government has assured citizens that the country is making progress under President Bola Tinubu, despite concerns raised by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) regarding ongoing national challenges.

The Presidency’s response came through a statement issued on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

In the statement, Onanuga noted that while Nigeria still faces governance challenges, the Tinubu administration has taken steps to improve security, economic stability, and youth empowerment.

The statement was a reaction to comments made by CBCN President, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru, during a bishops’ plenary meeting in Abuja. At the meeting, Archbishop Iwejuru spoke about issues such as unemployment, insecurity, poverty, and corruption, calling on the government to act swiftly to address them.

“President Bola Tinubu deeply appreciates the constant interventions of the Catholic Bishops in matters of governance in our country.

“The Conference of Catholic Bishops’ patriotic fervour and commitment to national unity, peace, and stability are unassailable and deeply valued,” the statement read.

On the issue of security, Onanuga stated that Nigeria is in a better position today compared to 2023, crediting the military and security agencies for their efforts in tackling crime and insurgency.

“In the last two years, over 8,000 criminals—including bandits, armed robbers, Boko Haram terrorists, and kidnappers—have been eliminated, while over 10,000 Nigerians, mostly women and children, have been rescued,” he stated.

He further noted that improved security has enabled more farmers to return to their fields, leading to increased food production and a reduction in commodity prices.

Regarding economic concerns, Onanuga said Tinubu’s administration has worked to stabilise the economy and improve Nigeria’s financial standing. He assured Nigerians that the government remains committed to addressing the nation’s challenges while ensuring progress and stability.
