A tanker explosion on the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway caused widespread panic among motorists and commuters on Tuesday evening. The incident, which occurred around 7 p.m., led to massive flames and thick smoke, sparking concerns about casualties and damage in the area.
Videos shared on social media platform X showed the intensity of the fire, with bright flames engulfing parts of the road. While the exact cause of the explosion was yet to be confirmed, several online users speculated that a petrol tanker was involved.
An X user, Tonye Oliver, described the incident as a “major disaster,” while another user, Pamilerin Adegoke, advised motorists to stay away from the area, stating, “Please avoid the Bridge, heavy fire right now.”
Emergency services quickly responded to the scene to contain the fire and manage the situation. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, with its spokesperson, Nosa Okunbor, stating in a WhatsApp message, “Some sort of explosion. Awaiting Preliminary Report. LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team at the location.”
