A woman lost her life after jumping into the Lagos lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge. The tragic incident happened on Thursday around 4 p.m. near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront.

Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday. He noted that the Marine Police stationed nearby responded quickly to the situation.

Despite their efforts, the woman’s body was later recovered at the UNILAG shore slipway. Hundeyin shared details about the event, stating, “An unidentified lady, whose name is yet unknown, reportedly jumped from the Third Mainland Bridge into the water at UNILAG waterfront on Thursday at about 4 p.m.

“She was recovered at the University of Lagos shore-slip way by a team of marine police attached there, and she was confirmed dead by a team of UNILAG medical doctors in the presence of a police team from Sabo division.”

Authorities have since moved the woman’s remains to the Infectious Disease Hospital Mortuary in Yaba for preservation.

Hundeyin also noted that the police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the incident. It remains unclear what may have driven the woman to take such an action, but officials are working to gather more information.
