Police Inspector Shoots Self Dead in Ogun

A police inspector identified as Ajele Oloyede has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a ceramics company in Igbesa, Ogun State. The tragic incident happened while he was on duty as part of the security team assigned to the facility.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred on Thursday. A fellow officer, Tolorunloju Stephen, from the Force Headquarters Annex in Lagos, was the one who discovered what had happened.

Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, noted that Stephen had just returned from Ikeja at around 1:20 p.m. when he found Oloyede in the security office. The inspector was resting his head on a table. Concerned, Stephen asked him about his well-being, but Oloyede assured him that he was fine.

Believing there was no issue, Stephen placed his bag and pistol on the table before stepping into the restroom. However, by the time he returned, he was met with a shocking sight—Oloyede had shot himself.

The reason behind the officer’s decision remains unclear. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the tragic event. Odutola stated that further details would be made available as the investigation progresses.

Suicide among law enforcement officers is a growing concern, with many struggling with stress and other personal challenges. While it is unclear if Oloyede showed any warning signs, the incident serves as a reminder of the need for mental health support within the police force.
