Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga title chase suffered another setback after a 1-1 draw against Union Berlin on Saturday. The result could give defending champions Bayer Leverkusen a chance to close the gap if they win their upcoming match against Stuttgart.
Bayern came into the game looking to recover from a surprising home defeat to Bochum last week. However, they struggled to break down Union Berlin’s solid defense despite dominating possession.
The first half saw very few clear-cut chances for either team. Bayern’s best opportunity came in the 51st minute when Harry Kane struck a powerful free-kick, but Union Berlin’s goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow made a comfortable save.
The breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute when Leroy Sane found the net. Sane weaved through a crowded penalty area before tapping in a pass from Josip Stanisic, putting Bayern in front. However, Union Berlin responded strongly after conceding the goal.
The home team equalized when Benedict Hollerbach took advantage of a mistake by Bayern’s young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig. Hollerbach was in the right place at the right time to punish the error, bringing the score level.
Union Berlin pushed forward in the final minutes, hoping to claim their first-ever victory over Bayern in their 12th attempt. However, they couldn’t find the winning goal.
Despite spending much of the season near the relegation zone, Union Berlin has proven tough to beat at home against top teams. Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt, Mainz, Freiburg, and now Bayern have all failed to secure a win in Berlin.
Meanwhile, in another Bundesliga match, Mainz and Freiburg played to an exciting 2-2 draw. Mainz, despite going down to 10 men after Dominik Kohr’s red card in the 43rd minute, twice took the lead. However, Freiburg managed to equalize on both occasions. The result leaves Mainz in third place and Freiburg in fifth, with both teams still chasing their first-ever Champions League qualification.
Elsewhere, Borussia Moenchengladbach secured a 4-2 victory over Werder Bremen, thanks to an Alassane Plea hat-trick. Plea’s two first-half goals put Gladbach in control, but Bremen fought back with quick goals from Romano Schmid and Andre Silva before halftime. Plea struck again just two minutes into the second half, and Tim Kleindienst added another to seal the win.
Augsburg continued their strong form in 2025 with a 1-0 win over Wolfsburg. Phillip Tietz scored the only goal, extending Augsburg’s unbeaten run to 10 league matches. They have conceded just three goals this year, the lowest in Europe’s top five leagues.
