A major disaster was narrowly avoided in Sokoto on Tuesday when a petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) overturned at Dan Marna Filling Station in Gagi, Sokoto South Local Government Area. The accident resulted in fuel spilling onto the road, posing a serious fire risk.
Officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Sokoto State Command, quickly arrived at the scene and took control of the situation. They cordoned off the area, restricted movement, and prevented unauthorized persons from scooping the highly flammable liquid.
Speaking at the site, Sokoto State NSCDC Commandant UI Alfadarai, represented by Deputy Commandant Florence Awosan, reassured residents that all necessary precautions were being taken to avoid an explosion.
“Our priority is the safety of lives and property. We have deployed adequate personnel to manage the situation and prevent any possible explosion,” she stated.
Firefighters and other emergency responders worked alongside NSCDC officers to reduce any potential hazards. By midday, the remaining fuel was safely transferred from the tanker, and the vehicle was removed from the scene.
To ensure full safety, NSCDC officers remained on-site for further surveillance. Residents of Gagi praised the NSCDC for their quick intervention, noting how important such rapid responses are in preventing tragedies.
