The Rivers State Government has reacted with shock to President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara while allowing Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to remain in office. The government noted that Wike has been accused of playing a major role in the state’s ongoing political crisis.
In a statement released by the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the government described the development as unfair. Johnson noted that despite the political tensions in the state, Governor Fubara has remained committed to constitutional order, peace, and good governance.
He further stated that since taking office, Fubara has focused on protecting lives and property while ensuring the state’s progress. Even with the political crisis, the governor has continued to perform his constitutional duties, prioritizing the interests of the people over political battles.
Following President Tinubu’s intervention to mediate the crisis, the Rivers State Government implemented the agreed resolutions, including reinstating commissioners who had previously resigned. The government also acted swiftly to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling upon receiving the certified true copy of the judgment, showing its commitment to the law and democracy.
However, Johnson noted that despite these efforts, lawmakers loyal to Wike, who is also a former governor of Rivers State, have continued to fuel political instability. He expressed surprise that while Fubara has been removed, Wike remains in office despite being accused of deepening the crisis.
“It is shocking that Mr. President sacked the governor and left his minister, who is the principal actor,” Johnson stated.
Despite the political challenges, Johnson reassured the people of Rivers State that governance remains on track. He noted that salaries have been paid, development projects are ongoing, and the state remains stable.
At this critical moment, the Rivers State Government has urged residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding. It also reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant institutions to protect democracy and ensure the continued growth of Rivers State.
“We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” Johnson added.
