Ibadan Airport Temporarily Closed, Says FAAN

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed the temporary closure of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan. The closure was approved by the Federal Government to allow ongoing upgrade projects at the airport.

FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, explained that the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has shut down both the airport and its runway. This decision aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations, ensuring compliance with global aviation safety standards.

She stated, “As part of Oyo State government’s initiative to upgrade Ibadan Airport from a domestic to an international airport, various improvements and remodeling works are currently underway.”

The planned upgrades are expected to modernize the airport, making it suitable for international flights. The improvements include infrastructure development, runway expansion, and enhancements to airport facilities. These changes aim to boost aviation operations in the region, attracting more airlines and passengers.

The closure, according to FAAN, is necessary to ensure the safety of passengers, airline operators, and airport staff. With construction work in progress, keeping the airport operational could pose safety risks.

“In compliance with aviation safety’s recommended standards and processes, the closure became imperative to ensure the safety of passengers as well as airport personnel,” Orah noted.

FAAN urged all airport users, airline operators, and stakeholders to cooperate and be patient during the temporary closure. While no official reopening date has been provided, authorities are expected to give updates as the upgrade progresses.
