JUST IN: Five Inmates Recaptured After Kogi Prison Break

Five out of twelve inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, have been recaptured. The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, revealing that the jailbreak happened in the early hours of the day due to a security breach.

The escape occurred when inmates in one section of the facility tampered with padlocks, creating an opportunity for twelve individuals to flee. Upon receiving the report, Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, swiftly mobilized security personnel in collaboration with heads of security agencies and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Kogi State. Officers were deployed to restore order and launch a manhunt for the fleeing inmates.

The NCoS stated, “The Nigerian Correctional Service confirms a security breach at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, 24 March, 2025. During the unfortunate incident, some inmates in a section of the facility manipulated the padlocks, leading to the escape of 12 inmates.”

Security forces have been working to track down the remaining seven escapees, with ongoing efforts to bring them back into custody. Officials have urged the public to report any suspicious activity that may help in locating the fugitives.

Meanwhile, the NCoS has launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances that led to the jailbreak. Authorities are also conducting a security audit of correctional facilities across the country to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“The Acting Controller General of Corrections has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape. Additionally, a security audit is being conducted across all correctional facilities nationwide to prevent future occurrences,” the statement added.

The NCoS reassured Nigerians that measures are being put in place to strengthen security at all custodial centres. The agency also called on citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces in ensuring the remaining escapees are apprehended as soon as possible.
