Kaduna State to Hire 1,800 Health Workers to Improve Primary Healthcare

The Kaduna State government has approved the recruitment of 1,800 health workers to address the shortage of personnel in Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities across the state. Governor Uba Sani has taken this step to strengthen the healthcare system and improve access to medical services for residents.

The Commissioner of Health, Hajiya Umma Ahmad, confirmed the development in a statement released on Thursday. She noted that the recruitment would help fill existing gaps in human resources, ultimately leading to better healthcare delivery, especially for mothers and children. This move is expected to reduce maternal and child mortality rates while improving overall public health in the state.

Hajiya Umma also noted that Kaduna State has been working to improve its healthcare infrastructure. Currently, 255 PHC facilities are undergoing renovations, with modern medical equipment being provided and essential drugs distributed to ensure better service delivery. She disclosed that all 255 centers will be remodeled and upgraded to Level 2 status as part of Governor Sani’s broader plan to enhance healthcare services.

The upgraded PHC facilities will be equipped to handle various medical conditions, including uncomplicated diabetes and hypertension. Additionally, they will provide emergency care for severe asthma cases and offer assisted delivery services for pregnant women. This upgrade aims to make quality healthcare more accessible to residents, particularly in rural areas.

Hajiya Umma further noted that since Governor Sani assumed office on May 29, 2023, his administration has prioritized the health sector. She pointed out that the state’s efforts have gained recognition, with Kaduna receiving 10 national and international awards, including the prestigious Excellence Award from the International Supply Chain Education Alliance (ISCEA).

She added, “Under the present administration, quality healthcare is not a privilege but a fundamental human right, and this explains why the PHC Leadership Challenge that Kaduna State received ranked the state as the best in Primary Health Care in the North West zone.”
