Abia Health Workers Threaten Strike Over Unpaid Salaries, Issue 15-Day Ultimatum

A coalition of health workers in Abia State has given Governor Alex Otti a 15-day ultimatum to resolve outstanding salary issues or face a statewide strike. The coalition, which includes the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, the Medical and Health Union of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals, claims the state government has failed to implement the revised Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).

In a letter dated March 27, 2025, and received at the Government House in Umuahia on March 28, the union leaders, Ngozi Duke, Offor Solomon, and Oparaocha Chibueze, expressed frustration over the government’s silence despite a previous 21-day notice that expired on March 26. The letter noted that no government official had engaged them in discussions regarding their grievances, leaving many health workers struggling financially.

The coalition stated that they had already begun mobilizing and sensitizing members across the state in preparation for the strike. They warned that the continued delay in addressing their concerns could affect their well-being and disrupt healthcare services in the state.

The union representatives explained that their members have been facing financial hardship due to the government’s failure to implement the revised salary structure. They stressed that without a resolution, the situation could lead to a decline in healthcare services, putting patients at risk.

“The coalition of Abia health union is compelled to invoke Section 41 of the Trade Dispute Act Cap T8, laws of the Federation of Nigeria, to issue 15 days notice of withdrawal of services if our demand is not reasonably addressed,” the letter stated.
