The Kano State Police Command has launched an investigation into the violent incident that occurred during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations on March 30, 2025. The clash happened as the entourage of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, moved through the city, despite a police ban on Durbar activities.
The State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has set up an eight-member Special Investigation Panel (SIP) to determine the cause of the violence and whether there was a violation of the police directive prohibiting Durbar and horse-riding throughout the Sallah festivities.
A statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed that the panel’s objective is to uncover those responsible and ensure justice is served. The police had imposed the ban due to security concerns, fearing possible unrest during the celebrations.
However, despite the restriction, violence erupted, leading to the death of a vigilante member, Surajo Rabiu, from Sabon Titi Jaba Quarters. Another person, identified as Aminu Suleman from Kofar Mata Quarters, sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital in Kano.
In connection with the incident, the police have arrested two suspects: 20-year-old Usman Sagiru from Sharifai Quarters and 35-year-old Nasir Idris from Kofar Mazugal Quarters. Both are now in custody as investigations continue.
Furthermore, the Police Command has summoned Shamakin Kano, Alhaji Wada Isyaku, for questioning regarding his alleged role in the defiance of the Durbar ban. Authorities are seeking to determine whether any individuals deliberately disregarded the security directive, leading to the outbreak of violence.
The Police Command has reiterated its firm stance against acts of thuggery, warning that anyone involved in activities that could disrupt public order will face legal consequences. “Anyone found culpable will be made to face the full wrath of the law,” the police statement noted.
