The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has uncovered an alarming number of fraudulent academic credentials among candidates applying for Direct Entry admission to Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
Out of 148 A-Level results submitted to the institution for this purpose, only six were found to be authentic, while the remaining 142 were confirmed to be fake.
This revelation came through JAMB’s weekly bulletin, where the examination board shared ongoing efforts to clean up the admission process across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. JAMB notes that its verification systems are designed to ensure only genuine academic documents are accepted for university entry.
The problem reportedly came to light after Bayero University raised concerns over the results being submitted by applicants. Upon internal verification, the university discovered that just six of the results it reviewed were genuine, prompting further investigation.
JAMB responded by tapping into the Nigeria Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System (NIPEDS), a platform it developed two years ago. The system was created precisely to tackle issues like this—where forged academic records are used by candidates seeking admission through Direct Entry, often bypassing regular academic procedures.
“NIPEDS has allowed us to uncover a wide range of fake results, even those from institutions abroad,” JAMB stated.
In a related development, another 13 fake A-Level certificates were recently detected by JAMB, some of which had already been used to secure provisional admission in various institutions. The individuals involved have been handed over to law enforcement for prosecution.
One of the more troubling discoveries involved applicants submitting fake IJMBE results supposedly from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in a bid to gain entry into the same university. JAMB has warned that institutions offering admission based on fake documents will be considered as aiding the fraud.
