A tragic incident occurred on Sunday, when a woman lost her life after a canoe capsized on the Erekiti River in Lagos State. The victim, identified as Abosede, was with her husband Jesuyon and her 17-year-old sister, Mary, as they were returning home from the farm.
The trio was traveling across the river when, unexpectedly, the canoe overturned while in the middle of the water. As the boat capsized, all three passengers were thrown into the river.
Jesuyon and Mary managed to survive, but in a desperate attempt to rescue his wife, Jesuyon swam to safety with his sister-in-law. However, despite his efforts, he was unable to save Abosede, as the powerful current of the river swept her away.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, noting that a coordinated search operation is currently underway to locate and recover Abosede’s body. “Based on the report, teams of Marine policemen and local divers were mobilised for a search and rescue operation. Efforts are ongoing to recover the missing body. The investigation is in progress,” Hundeyin stated.
