The Presidency has denied rumors suggesting that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has been dismissed from his position by President Bola Tinubu.
This follows a wave of online reports and social media posts that began circulating early Monday morning.
These reports alleged that President Tinubu had removed Professor Yakubu from office and replaced him with another academic, Professor Bashiru Olamilekan. The change was described by some sources as part of a major shake-up within the electoral commission.
However, in response to the claims, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Digital and New Media, O’tega Ogra, issued a public statement to clarify the situation. Using his verified account on X (formerly Twitter), Ogra stated: “Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman.”
He also noted that there has been no official communication or action from the President or the government regarding the removal of Professor Yakubu. According to Ogra, the information being spread is baseless and should not be taken seriously.
