Two people have lost their lives following the collapse of an illegal mining site in the Farin-Doki area of Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State. The incident took place early Sunday morning and has left the local community in shock.
The Niger State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the tragic event. According to him, the unfortunate incident occurred around 8 a.m. on April 13. He said the bodies of the victims were found lifeless and have since been taken to a hospital in Zumba for proper documentation and further procedures.
“On April 13, at about 8 a.m., information was received that there was a collapse/slide at a mining site at Farin-Doki area of Shiroro LGA.
“During the rock slides, two persons were trapped, who were later identified as Buhari Kano and Mallam Tasiu both of Kano State.
“Police operatives attached to Erena Div and community members mobilised to the scene for a rescue.
“Unfortunately, suspected lifeless bodies of the two persons were recovered. The bodies were taken to a hospital in Zumba.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were suspected to have gone to the site at night for illegal mining activities before the rock slides occurred,” the PPRO declared.
The identities of the deceased were later confirmed as Buhari Kano and Mallam Tasiu, both natives of Kano State. They were reportedly involved in unauthorized mining operations when the rocks collapsed on them.
Local residents and police officers from Erena Division rushed to the scene to carry out rescue operations. Unfortunately, by the time they reached the site, the victims had already died.
