Assaulted Female Driver Will Get Justice, Says Lagos NURTW Chairman

The chairman, Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mustapha Adio, also known as Tafa Sego, has assured that justice will be served for Yetunde Amole, a female driver who was recently assaulted in Lagos.

Adio gave this assurance on Monday when Amole visited the NURTW office located in Oko Oba, Agege. She was welcomed by union members and then led into the chairman’s office for a private meeting.

Amole became the center of public attention last week after a disturbing video surfaced online. In the video, a man, later identified as Friday Onu, was seen attacking her in the Ajah area of the state. The incident sparked outrage across social media, with citizens demanding justice for the woman.

According to Amole, the assault occurred when she caught Onu trying to remove the battery from her vehicle. When she confronted him, the situation escalated. Onu allegedly beat her, tore her clothes, and dragged her in public.

Many people believed the attacker was linked to the transport union, but Adio has made it clear that Onu is not a member.

“The person who attacked her is not one of us,” Adio said during the meeting. “He is a well-known street boy, not connected in any way to the NURTW.”

He noted that the union does not tolerate any form of harassment and that their members are trained to interact respectfully with the public. He added that the organization is working hard to clean up its image and promote proper behavior among transport workers.

Adio also praised the Lagos State Police Command for taking quick action. The attacker, Onu, was arrested by officers from the Maroko Division. Due to health concerns, he was later moved to the Falomo Police Hospital.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin has confirmed that Onu will face charges once doctors confirm he is fit for trial.

The NURTW chairman stated, “We will ensure that Yetunde Amole gets justice in this instance. This will serve as a strong warning to others not to harass any driver in the state.”

Adio noted the importance of protecting the rights of all drivers, regardless of gender, and urged the public to report any abuse or illegal behavior involving transport workers.

He concluded by pledging the union’s full cooperation with the police and state government in bringing justice to the victim and preventing similar incidents in the future.
