Brazilian football star Neymar Jr. has once again been hit by injury, cutting short his much-anticipated return to Santos just 34 minutes into his appearance in the Brasileirão. The match, held on Wednesday, saw the 33-year-old forward start for Santos, but fans were left concerned as he was substituted before halftime.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported the incident, saying, “Neymar Jr leaves the pitch with a new injury as Santos started him tonight in the Brasileirão. After 34 minutes, Neymar has been subbed off.”
This latest blow adds to the long list of physical struggles Neymar has endured in recent years. Once one of the world’s most electrifying footballers, his career has taken a difficult turn due to repeated injuries. His return to Santos had been filled with hope and excitement, but the joy was short-lived.
Earlier this year, Neymar parted ways with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal after an injury-plagued spell that lasted less than two years. He had joined the club in August 2023 on a high-profile deal reportedly worth $104 million per year. However, he only managed seven appearances.
In October 2023, during a World Cup qualifier for Brazil, he suffered a torn cruciate ligament. After months of recovery, he attempted a comeback in late 2024 but was again sidelined, this time due to a hamstring injury. The Saudi club eventually announced a mutual termination of his contract in January 2025.
“The club expresses its thanks and appreciation to Neymar for what he has provided throughout his career with Al-Hilal, and wish the player success in his career,” Al-Hilal stated.
Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus also noted, “He can no longer play at the level we are used to. Things have become difficult for him, unfortunately.”
Despite all these setbacks, Neymar remains determined to represent Brazil one final time at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. “I know this will be my last World Cup, my last shot, my last chance and I will do everything I can to play in it,” he told CNN in January.
His return to Santos, the club where he first rose to stardom, was seen as a possible fresh start. The negotiations that brought him back were seen as a nostalgic move for both Neymar and fans of Brazilian football. However, this early exit from the game raises questions about whether his body can still handle top-level football.
