Atiku Abubakar, Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has used Arsenal Football Club’s recent performance in the UEFA Champions League as a symbol of what teamwork and unity can achieve, especially in the world of politics.
In a post shared on his official X (formerly known as Twitter) account on Wednesday, Atiku praised the Premier League club’s display of unity against 15-time champions Real Madrid, saying it served as a powerful example for politicians in Nigeria.
“Arsenal just taught us a lesson in consolidating our strengths in a coalition vehicle. Victory is assured when we stand united,” he wrote.
This comment from Atiku comes at a time when discussions about possible opposition alliances are gaining momentum in the build-up to the 2027 general elections. While some political figures and groups have raised doubts about forming coalitions, Atiku continues to push for the coming together of like-minded parties.
Recently, the PDP Governors’ Forum announced that they were not ready to join any merger or alliance at this time. Despite that, Atiku has made it clear that unity among opposition groups is necessary if they aim to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next national polls.
