Bandits Demand N60 Million from 12 Zamfara Villages

Bandits operating in parts of Zamfara State have reportedly demanded a huge sum of N60 million from twelve rural communities, accusing them of assisting recent military operations in the area.

This demand has sparked fear and concern among villagers, who now worry that they may be attacked if they fail to meet the deadline given by the armed groups.

The information was made public by Bakatsine, a journalist who covers conflict and security issues in Nigeria’s northwestern region. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he listed the affected communities as Koloma, Dan Hayin Zargado, Zargado, Dan Godabe, Sabuwar Tunga, Makini, Bubaka, Yelwa, Bahwada, Koda, Manya, and Kabusu.

Bakatsine noted that the bandits claim the villages have been helping the military carry out raids, which led to recent losses among their fighters. In response, they have allegedly ordered the residents to pay the N60 million as a form of punishment or face violent attacks.

He wrote: “Bandits have imposed a N60m levy on 12 Zamfara communities: Koloma, Dan Hayin Zargado, Zargado, Dan Godabe, Sabuwar Tunga, Makini, Bubaka, Yelwa, Bahwada, Koda, Manya & Kabusu for allegedly aiding military raids. Residents fear attacks if they don’t pay.”

Zamfara State has remained a hotspot for banditry over the last few years. Despite ongoing security operations and government efforts, the situation remains tense in many parts of the state.
