Air Peace Shuts Flight Operations Nationwide

Air Peace, one of Nigeria’s major airlines, has announced the suspension of all its domestic flight operations effective immediately. This decision comes as a result of the ongoing strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which has left the airline without access to critical weather reports necessary for flight safety.

The airline made the announcement in a statement issued on Wednesday, noting that the strike by NiMet workers, who handle weather forecasting and provide vital updates for flight safety, has forced Air Peace to halt operations.

Specifically, the airline pointed out that the absence of the Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather (CNH) reports, which are issued by NiMet, posed a significant risk to flights, especially during the rainy season when hazardous weather conditions such as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are common.

In the statement, Air Peace emphasized that its top priority is ensuring the safety of passengers and crews.

“We regret to inform you that due to the ongoing strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Air Peace is suspending all flight operations nationwide with immediate effect,” the airline said. “This decision is necessary because NiMet is the agency responsible for issuing CNH reports, which are critical for safe landings, especially during this season of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Without these reports from the control tower, flight safety cannot be guaranteed.”

The airline also assured passengers that it was committed to keeping them informed about any updates or options for rescheduling flights. “As a safety-first airline, we have chosen to act responsibly by suspending operations until NiMet resumes full service,” the statement added. “We understand this may cause inconvenience, and we sincerely apologise.”
