So-Safe Corps Nabs Suspect for Cable Theft at Ogun Stadium

The Ogun State Community Security outfit, known as the So-Safe Corps, has arrested a young man, Aliyu Umaru, aged 24, in connection with the theft and vandalism of underground electric cables at the Gateway International Stadium located in Ilaro.

This was made known through a statement released on Friday by the State Commander of the Corps, Soji Ganzallo. The announcement was officially signed by the Corps’ Director of Information and Public Relations, Assistant Commander Moruf Yusuf.

According to the release, officers attached to the Ilaro Area Command were carrying out a regular night patrol on Tuesday, April 23, 2025, at around 2:00 a.m. During their surveillance around the stadium area in Yewa South Local Government, they noticed suspicious movements within the stadium grounds.

Ganzallo noted that as the officers approached the site of the activity, they found the suspect, Umaru, in the process of digging up and stealing electrical cables that were buried underground. He was caught on the spot and arrested immediately.

“Upon approaching the scene, the officers discovered the suspect, Aliyu Umaru, in the act of vandalising and stealing underground cables. He was immediately apprehended at the scene,” the statement read.

It was further stated that during the suspect’s questioning, officers recovered several items believed to have been used in the crime. These included a portion of the stolen cables, a cutlass, and a pair of scissors.

Ganzallo also noted that the arrested suspect and the items found with him have been transferred to the Ilaro Divisional Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force. The matter will now be further investigated and may lead to formal charges against the suspect.
