What was meant to be a joyful ceremony ended in confusion and disappointment as a wedding scheduled to hold at the Assemblies of God Church, Okpu 2, was abruptly cancelled by church leaders.
The decision to cancel the event reportedly came after the bride refused to comply with a key requirement in the church’s pre-marriage tradition.
One of these requirements involved spending the night before the wedding at the parsonage — the residence of the officiating pastor.
According to reports, the purpose of this overnight stay was for the bride to receive counseling from the pastor’s wife, as part of the church’s marital preparation routine.
In addition to the overnight counseling, it was learned that the bride was also expected to undergo a pregnancy test. These steps, according to members of the church familiar with the customs, are standard procedures that couples are made aware of during the marriage planning process.
However, sources claim that the bride, though initially informed and in agreement with these steps, failed to appear at the parsonage as planned. This prompted the church to cancel the ceremony just hours before it was set to begin.
Promise Uzoma Okoro, who was present, noted, “The bride’s refusal to stay at the parsonage, as required, prompted church authorities to cancel the wedding.” He added that guests had already arrived and were seated when the shocking announcement was made.
