Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered security forces to clamp down hard on cult violence and killings happening across Edo State, especially in Benin City. His order comes after at least five people were killed between Friday and Sunday in a fresh wave of violent clashes between rival cult groups.
The directive was delivered on Tuesday through a statement by Bugie Okhuemoi, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity. According to the statement, the government is very disturbed by the recent rise in cult activities and has decided that strong action is now necessary.
“The Edo State Government is deeply concerned about the resurgence of cult-related violence in some parts of the state,” the statement read.
Governor Okpebholo had previously held several meetings—some personally, others through state officials—with leaders of the suspected cult groups in a bid to end their violent operations. At those meetings, the governor made clear that the state would no longer tolerate the killing of its young people or the destabilisation of its communities.
“It is important to recall that following earlier disturbances last year, Governor Okpebholo, among several proactive steps taken, convened personally and through his agents, a series of critical meetings with the known leaders of groups suspected to be involved in these criminal activities,” the statement continued.
At that time, the cult group leaders were told to control their members and take responsibility for their actions. But the governor now notes that some of those involved have ignored the agreement.
“Governor Okpebholo has directed security agencies to move in decisively. Those who have tested the will of the state will face the full weight of the Edo State Anti-Cultism and Kidnapping Law. There will be no sacred cows,” the statement added.
The governor also said that his administration would not back down from its mission to ensure peace, safety, and development throughout Edo State.
“This administration remains unshaken in its commitment to rid Edo State of cultism, criminality, and all threats to peace and order. We urge all law-abiding residents to remain calm and continue with their daily activities,” the statement noted.
Governor Okpebholo also assured the public that security agencies have been fully mobilised and are working non-stop to bring peace back to affected areas.
“The Okpebholo administration is determined to build a safe, stable, and prosperous Edo State — and no amount of intimidation or criminal defiance will stand in the way of that goal,” it concluded.
