Workers’ Day: FG Declares May 1 Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, as a public holiday to celebrate this year’s Workers’ Day across the country.

The announcement came from the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement released Tuesday evening by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo noted that the government appreciates the dedication and sacrifices made by workers in different sectors of the economy. According to him, the steady commitment of the workforce is a major reason Nigeria maintains its place among respected nations.

“There is dignity in labour; the dedication and commitment to the work we do is vital to nation-building,” the minister said.

He further noted that without the active role of workers, the country’s progress would not be possible. He used the opportunity to call on all Nigerian workers to adopt a mindset of innovation and increased productivity, which, he said, is key to building a stronger and more resilient nation.

The minister also encouraged workers to continue improving in their respective fields. He said raising the standard of their work would contribute to better governance and ensure that all Nigerians benefit from the country’s wealth.

“The minister encouraged workers to raise the bar of their trade to drive and upgrade the bar of governance and make all the people of Nigeria derive maximum benefit from the nation’s wealth.”

Assuring the public of safety and stability, Dr. Tunji-Ojo said the current administration is fully focused on ensuring the security of all citizens and foreigners in Nigeria. He mentioned that efforts are ongoing to strengthen public institutions and ensure peace, which he described as essential for industrial and economic growth.

He also reminded Nigerians of the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Tinubu and urged the public to remain hopeful for positive changes in the coming months.
