Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has said he is unfazed by the criticisms and remarks coming from opposition parties in the state, stating that he prefers to respond through his actions and achievements in office.
Governor Otti made this statement when he welcomed Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe, the member representing Bende North State Constituency, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling Labour Party in the state.
Speaking during the visit, Governor Otti noted that most of the so-called opposition noise is not a genuine intention to run for office but rather an attempt to remain relevant or secure personal benefits. He described it as political theatrics by individuals who seek recognition rather than victory.
“We are not bothered about the opposition and their noise. There are different reasons why people show up for elections. Sometimes, they just want recognition; that their names showed up for the primaries, knowing fully well that they will not win the election,” Otti said.
He continued: “Some of them also come for negotiations and then of course, some others also show up for projections; they look at themselves and say, ‘if I start the noise in 2025, maybe by 2040, they will know that I have been in the race and they will call me and recognize me’, so they are projecting themselves.”
Governor Otti stressed that his administration is dedicated to fulfilling the promises made to the people. He said he would rather continue working than engage in verbal exchanges with critics.
“People are making noise but I respond with work. We are very committed to the job that our people asked us to do. We are doing just that,” he noted.
He further described governance as a responsibility grounded in service and leadership, insisting that his government remains focused on the people’s needs rather than political maneuvering.
In praising Hon. Ibekwe’s decision to join the Labour Party, Otti said the lawmaker’s move was voluntary and made without external pressure. He also mentioned that the Labour Party welcomes members without discrimination, adding that Ibekwe is now a ranking member and will be officially received at a later date.
Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe, while speaking, said that the achievements of Governor Otti influenced his decision to switch parties. He described the current period as the best time for the people of Abia and pledged full support for Otti’s 2027 re-election bid.
