Court Reinstates Suspended Edo LG Chairman

Law Court

The Edo State High Court in Igarra has declared the removal of the Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Taju Alade, as unlawful and ordered that he be returned to office without delay.

The ruling, delivered on Wednesday, came after weeks of legal battles following Alade’s suspension from his role as chairman. The presiding judge, Justice B.A. Okoh, noted that the impeachment process carried out by the local authorities did not follow due legal procedures and therefore could not stand.

According to the judgment, the court rejected the argument by the state government which claimed that the court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the matter. Justice Okoh firmly ruled that the court indeed had the legal power to decide on the case, stating that “this Honourable Court has the jurisdiction to entertain and determine the suit before it.”

The judge also directed Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure adequate security for Taju Alade as he returns to office. The directive was made to avoid any breakdown of law and order and ensure Alade is able to perform his duties without threats or disruptions.
