May Day: We’ll Never Take Workers’ Sacrifices for Granted – Oborevwori

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has assured workers that his administration will continue to prioritize their welfare and ensure their sacrifices are never taken for granted.

Speaking during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration, Oborevwori noted the importance of workers in the development of the state and reaffirmed his commitment to pushing policies that support them and their families.

Represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, the governor emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” describing it as a timely call to action that should unite all workers in their shared pursuit of a better future.

In his address, Governor Oborevwori stated, “I join all Deltans and indeed Nigerians with immense pride and gratitude to celebrate our hardworking men and women on this Workers’ Day 2025. You, the workers of Delta State, civil servants, teachers, healthcare professionals, artisans, farmers, and private sector employees, are the backbone of our progress; I salute you all.” He further assured workers that his administration would never take their efforts lightly and would continue to introduce policies aimed at improving their living standards.

Acknowledging the ongoing challenges, including global economic pressures and rising costs of living, Oborevwori reassured the workers that his government was working diligently to alleviate these issues. “Since assuming office, my administration has placed workers at the heart of our M.O.R.E. Agenda, and we have taken steps to uplift the welfare of workers and ensure you thrive in an environment of dignity and opportunity,” he said.

The governor provided a detailed update on initiatives aimed at improving workers’ conditions. These included the prompt payment of salaries and pensions, clearing pension backlogs, and the introduction of training programs to enhance workers’ skills. He also highlighted the government’s investment in infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and markets, which are expected to reduce transportation costs and promote trade.

Oborevwori noted that efforts to support agriculture were also part of the state’s strategy to stabilize prices and improve food security, benefiting workers and their families. He emphasized that the government’s commitment to revitalizing schools and healthcare centers was designed to provide a better working environment for all sectors.

The celebration also featured a joint address from the Delta State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, and the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Comrade Martins Bolum. In their speech, they called on the state government to consider affordable housing options for workers, acknowledging the pressing need for low-cost housing to improve workers’ living conditions in the state.
