Workers in Kwara gathered at the George Innih Stadium in Ilorin on Thursday to join millions worldwide in marking this year’s Workers’ Day.
Under the joint leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the event served not only as a celebration of the workforce but also as a platform to call for urgent government action on the country’s growing economic difficulties.
The theme of the event, “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” reflected the current mood of workers facing increasing pressure from inflation, poor infrastructure, and limited job security.
Comrade Saheed Olayinka, Chairman of the NLC in Kwara State, noted the pressing challenges confronting workers. He described how rising food prices, housing struggles, and insufficient access to quality healthcare have worsened conditions for ordinary citizens.
“The organised labour remains committed to constructive engagement and dialogue with the government to address the economic challenges confronting members of the labour movement,” he said.
Olayinka urged state leaders to take immediate steps to tackle inflation and improve living standards. He pointed out that policies promoting local production, reducing transport expenses, and encouraging job creation would significantly ease the burden on families. He also appealed to the government to ensure that qualified local government employees are considered for the position of permanent secretaries.
TUC Chairman, Comrade Abdulrahman Onikijipa, supported the call for urgent reforms. He asked the government to prioritize affordable housing schemes for workers. According to him, a 35% salary allowance would help ease financial pressure on many families. “The government should also immediately pay the N30,000 minimum wage percentage to state pensioners without delay,” he added.
Representing Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Senior Advisor Saadu Salahu reassured workers of the administration’s commitment to their welfare. He said the state would continue to focus on job creation, investment, and public service reforms. “Let me reaffirm our administration’s commitment to building a Kwara where workers thrive—where decent jobs are created, where careers are nurtured, and where every sector is empowered to contribute meaningfully to the state’s prosperity,” Salahu stated.
He noted that the state has maintained salary payments, supported small-scale businesses, and introduced several welfare initiatives aimed at improving daily life for citizens.
Also speaking at the event, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Engr. Yakubu Danladi Salihu, praised workers for their vital role in state development. “I join the rest of the world in celebrating Nigeria’s workforce, especially those of our dear Kwara State, driving development and progress. We would continue to acknowledge, appreciate, and celebrate your efforts and your immeasurable contributions as our backbone,” he said.
