Fire Destroys Three Shops, Goods Behind Filling Station in Ibadan

The early hours of Friday brought panic to residents and business owners in Sango, Ibadan, as a fire broke out behind a filling station, reducing three shops to ashes and damaging goods worth millions of naira.

The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on May 2, 2025, near the Fart Oil Filling Station. According to initial findings, the fire reportedly began due to an electrical spark from a freezer that had been plugged in overnight. The spark quickly ignited flammable items nearby, causing a rapid spread of flames.

By the time emergency responders from the Oyo State Fire Service arrived, three out of ten adjoining prefabricated shops had already been engulfed in fire. Although no lives were lost, several valuable items, including commercial freezers and large stocks of beverages, were completely destroyed.

In a telephone conversation on Friday, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, noted that the agency received the emergency alert at precisely 4:41 a.m. from CSP Adesina. The alert reported the outbreak of fire at the row of shops located behind the fuel station.

“The agency’s personnel, led by ACFS Adedeji (Mrs), were promptly deployed to the scene. On arrival, it was discovered that three shops out of a row of ten prefabricated shops were well alight,” Akinyinka said.

He further explained that the team acted swiftly to contain the blaze, successfully preventing it from spreading to the remaining seven shops.

“The blaze was completely extinguished. No casualty was recorded. The fire affected three shops, freezers, and drinks. All nearby shops and property worth millions of naira were saved by officers of the fire service,” he said.
