Military Arrests Two Security Agents, Others Helping Terrorists in North-East

The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the arrest of four individuals aiding terrorist operations in the North-East region of Nigeria. Among those arrested are two members of the hybrid forces, who had previously worked with the military in the ongoing fight against insurgency.

In a statement issued on Friday, Major General Markus Kangye, the Director of Defence Media Operations, provided details of the operation, which took place between April 26 and April 29.

The operation, covering areas like Bama, Kukawa, and Madagali Local Government Areas, led to the interception of four logistics suppliers for the terrorists. It was revealed that two of these individuals were personnel from the hybrid forces, which combine both military and civilian elements.

This betrayal by personnel within the forces has raised serious concerns within the military. Major General Kangye expressed his worries, noting the significance of loyalty within the ranks.

“Commanders are to, therefore, sensitise hybrid forces personnel to desist from colluding with or encouraging terrorists’ acts capable of sabotaging their own operations,” he said.

Further military operations in the region, particularly in areas like Gwoza, Dikwa, Bama, and Chibok, have resulted in significant successes.

Troops, in collaboration with hybrid forces, carried out a series of fighting patrols, raids, and clearance missions. These operations led to the neutralization of several terrorists, the rescue of six kidnapped victims, and the recovery of large caches of weapons, motorcycles, and bicycles.

In a separate update, Major General Kangye highlighted the military’s success in curbing illegal oil refining and theft in the Niger Delta. Troops managed to recover over 86,000 litres of stolen crude oil, 72,000 litres of illegal diesel, and more than 2,600 litres of petrol.

Additionally, numerous illegal refining sites were destroyed, and items such as boats, vehicles, and motorcycles were seized during the operations. Eighteen oil thieves were also arrested, along with the recovery of various arms and ammunition.

Kangye reaffirmed the military’s commitment to national security, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and share credible information with security agencies.

He assured the public that while certain operational details must remain confidential for security reasons, the military’s primary focus is on eradicating terrorism, banditry, and other criminal threats in the country.

“The Armed Forces will continue to be guided by clear objectives: to safeguard national security, support our allies, and maintain regional stability,” Kangye emphasized. “We recognise the importance of transparency and accountability, and we remain committed to keeping the public informed through accurate and timely updates.”
