Oseloka Obaze, a long-time associate of Peter Obi and one of the respected voices within the Labour Party (LP), has officially resigned from the party. His resignation comes in response to what he described as deeply flawed processes during the April 5, 2025, governorship primary election in Anambra State.
In a letter addressed to the chairman of Ochuche Ward 406 in Ogbaru Local Government Area, Obaze noted that the Labour Party failed to uphold democratic values during the primary. He said the entire exercise was tainted by irregularities that cast doubt on the integrity of the process.
Part of his resignation letter read: “The processes, conduct and outcome of the Labour Party governorship primaries held on April 5, 2025, in Awka were fraught with outright irregularities, bordering on fraud and criminality. It was not in tandem with either the party’s constitution and espoused core values or true tenets of democracy.”
Obaze, a former United Nations official and ex-Secretary to the Anambra State Government under Peter Obi, has long been seen as one of the intellectual forces behind the “Obedient” political movement. He also played a prominent role in Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign.
Speaking with reporters on Sunday, Obaze confirmed the authenticity of his resignation, stating, “The letter is real and speaks for itself.”
He also noted that the unresolved crisis within the Labour Party’s national leadership further influenced his decision. He pointed out the ongoing divisions between supporters of Julius Abure and Nenadi Usman, saying the party had failed to unify its leadership or chart a clear course forward.
Obaze’s resignation marks his second major political departure in recent years. He left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022, just a week before Peter Obi joined the Labour Party.
