NIMC Unveils New NIN Verification Service

The Federal Government has given the green light to a new identity verification platform developed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

This new system, called NIN Authentication or NINAuth, aims to make it easier and safer for Nigerians and legal residents to verify their National Identification Number (NIN) across different platforms.

NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, made the announcement on Tuesday in Lagos, noting that the service is now officially supported by the Presidency.

He also said all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have been instructed to begin using the platform for identity checks.

According to Adegoke, the NINAuth system works through the web, mobile applications, and via an Application Programming Interface (API). It is designed to strengthen the protection of users’ personal data while making access to various services smoother and more secure.

“This supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to improve how identities are managed in the country,” he said.

The system also puts a strong focus on data control. Users will now have to give permission before any of their information is shared for things like KYC (Know Your Customer) processes or other verification activities.

Adegoke noted that this approach will build trust and give individuals better control over their personal data.

With NINAuth, citizens and residents can verify their identity for a wide range of services including SIM registration and replacement, passport processing, tax filings, and financial transactions. It will also support government assistance programs, driver’s licence renewals, and other formal services that require verified identity.

Adegoke further explained that one of the key benefits of NINAuth is its single sign-on feature. This means users can access multiple services securely and easily without having to repeat verification steps each time.
