Senator Kawu Sumaila has officially left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). His defection was made public during the Senate’s plenary session on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
The shift was confirmed in a letter personally addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The letter, which made clear Sumaila’s intention to leave his former party, was read aloud during the session to all lawmakers present. According to protocol, once the letter was read, it triggered a reaction from members of the chamber, especially those from the APC.
Sumaila, a known political figure from Kano State, previously served as a member of the House of Representatives before rising to the Senate.
Immediately after the announcement, APC senators in the chamber left their seats and gathered around the new member. In a show of support and acceptance, they guided him to a new seat within the section typically reserved for the majority party.
