60,000 Nigerian Teachers Set to Make History with Record-Breaking Gathering in Lagos

More than 60,000 educators from across Nigeria are expected to converge on Lagos this September in what could become a historic moment for the country’s education sector. The gathering, organized as part of the Let There Be Teachers Conference 2025, aims to break the Guinness World Record for the largest assembly of teachers in one place.

During a press briefing held in Ikeja, Lagos, Oluwaseyi Anifowose, the Director of Strategic Partnerships at 1 Million Teachers and convener of the event, announced that the major gathering is scheduled to take place on September 20 at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS). He noted that the event’s theme is Teachers Matter: Celebrating the Role of Teachers in Enhancing Quality Education.

Anifowose shared that the Lagos State Government is not only aware of the initiative but has officially approved and backed the event. All public school teachers in the state have been given the green light to attend. According to him, the conference has received broad support from the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and other key stakeholders in the education sector.

“Over 60,000 teachers will gather at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos to celebrate their role, reaffirm their commitment and make history,” Anifowose said. “This is not just about breaking records, it’s about breaking barriers… and raising the bar and a new banner for teachers in Nigeria.”

The event will serve not only as a celebration but also as a forum to spark conversations around teacher-led education reforms. Notable education leaders, including Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, are expected to deliver keynote addresses. A formal communique calling for reforms in education policy, led by teachers themselves, will also be presented.

Professor Hakeem Subair, Chief Executive Officer of 1 Million Teachers, also shared his passion for the cause, noting his commitment to building a world where there are enough well-trained teachers to give every child access to quality education.

Sola Adeola, Head of Growth at Edusko, described the upcoming conference as a powerful moment to honor the impact of teachers on society.
