Self-acclaimed traditional ruler Adekolajo Aladeseyi has landed in police custody along with four others following an alleged illegal installation as the Olujare of Ijare, a prominent kingship in the Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The arrest, which was confirmed by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Olutokunbo Afolabi, came after security operatives acted on the orders of the Ondo State Government. The group, led by Aladeseyi, was reportedly attempting to carry out a traditional coronation ceremony without the legal consent of either the state or local authorities.
According to police sources, the event occurred on April 17, 2025. Aladeseyi was preparing to undergo a 30-day traditional rite typically required for newly installed monarchs before the police stepped in. Officers halted the process and took the suspects into custody to avoid possible unrest in the community.
The Olujare throne, which is classified as a first-class royal position, has been vacant since the passing of Oba Adebamigbe Oluwagbemigun nearly four years ago. Discussions around who should succeed the late king have stirred strong opinions, but authorities have insisted on following due process to maintain peace and order.
Commissioner Afolabi noted that the procedure used by Aladeseyi and his group had no legal standing. “The installation was not in line with the recognized tradition or the laws guiding chieftaincy matters in Ondo State,” he stated. He added that none of the necessary approvals were secured, and no green light was given by the kingmakers, local council, or state government.
“All five suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned in court to face charges,” Afolabi said.
Earlier, several kingmakers and elders in Ijare had objected to Aladeseyi’s claim to the throne. They called the move “fraudulent” and accused him of bypassing established customs and procedures.
