The House of Representatives has requested that the Federal Government construct more permanent orientation camps for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and renovate the ones already in use. This comes after concerns were raised about the poor condition of current facilities and the absence of proper camps in several states.
The decision was made during Thursday’s plenary session after a motion was moved by lawmaker Garba Muhammad. He noted that the NYSC serves as an important program that prepares thousands of young Nigerians every year through a three-week orientation program.
This period is meant to equip corps members with the knowledge and skills they need to contribute meaningfully during their service year.
Muhammad pointed out that the management of NYSC had raised issues in the past regarding the state of many orientation camps. He said that in some parts of the country, there are no permanent camps, and instead, temporary structures such as school buildings are used. In other areas, the camps are run-down and no longer fit to host large numbers of people.
“The House is alarmed that some states lack orientation camps altogether, while others rely on temporary use of secondary school facilities to accommodate prospective corps members,” Muhammad said.
He also noted that due to the poor conditions and limited space, some corps members are sent to other states for orientation. This creates extra stress and travel difficulties for them.
“Due to space limitations, corps members often face extended travel times after deployment, creating logistical challenges and added stress,” he added.
Muhammad urged that each state should have a well-equipped orientation camp that can take in at least 5,000 participants. He stated that modern and spacious camps would allow for better training and would help corps members gain useful skills for life and nation-building.
The motion was widely supported by lawmakers during the session. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas conducted a voice vote, and the motion was adopted.
The House has now asked the Federal Government to work closely with state governments to build new camps and upgrade old ones. It also wants the Ministry of Youth to partner with other stakeholders to come up with solid plans for improving NYSC facilities across Nigeria.
In addition, the House gave instructions to its Committees on Youth Development and Legislative Compliance to make sure this plan is followed. They are expected to report back within four weeks to provide updates on the progress.
