The Directorate of State Services (DSS) in Kano State has arrested five individuals accused of the abduction and murder of a one-year-old girl, Sakina Mamuda, from Duhun Bake village in Gwarzo Local Government Area.
The suspects, who are all from the same village as the victim, were detained after they allegedly kidnapped Sakina, demanded a ransom from her family, and then cruelly killed her.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage across the state, as the community reels from the heartbreaking loss.
The suspects, identified as Zailani Rabiu, Hafizu Yusuf, Abubakar Abdulkareem, Umar Lawan, and Amadu Salisu, are currently under investigation for their involvement in criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, and homicide.
According to a statement released by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, the criminals disposed of the baby’s body in an abandoned well after the murder.
Governor Yusuf has publicly praised the efforts of the DSS, acknowledging their quick response in capturing the suspects and preventing further harm.
“This senseless tragedy has shaken us to the core,” he said. “I commend the DSS for acting swiftly and decisively. We will continue to prioritize the safety of our people and ensure that those who threaten our peace are brought to justice.”
At a press briefing held at the Government House, State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Haruna Dederi, along with other senior officials, assured the public that the government would ensure justice is served quickly.
Dederi noted that the case would be handled with utmost seriousness, and all necessary steps would be taken to prosecute those responsible.
“The Governor expressed deep sorrow over the incident and praised the DSS operatives and other security agencies for their proactive response,” the statement added.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the state’s security framework, which includes better intelligence gathering and collaboration between law enforcement agencies.
