The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State is racing against time in an effort to stop the looming defection of three of its senators to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The political shift, expected to be formally announced next Tuesday, has caused serious concern within the state’s PDP ranks.
Sources say the senators in question—Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abubakar Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South)—are preparing to move to the APC following a recent high-level meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja.
The meeting, which reportedly took place on Friday at the Presidential Villa, was facilitated by APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje.
Insiders familiar with the development told DAILY POST that the planned move includes not just the three senators, but also several of their political allies, including both former and serving PDP officials from all senatorial zones in Kebbi State.
This potential mass defection has sent shockwaves through the state PDP leadership.
In a swift response to the news, the PDP State Chairman, Usman Bello-Suru, convened an emergency meeting late Friday night. A party source who attended the session explained that various ideas were proposed to prevent the defections. These included seeking a court order or launching personal interventions.
“In the end,” the source revealed, “we decided that talking directly to the senators and appealing to their loyalty to the party would be more effective than taking legal steps.”
So far, reaching the senators has proven difficult. Party members say the three lawmakers have stopped answering calls from PDP leaders since news of the planned defection emerged.
