The management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has ordered the immediate shutdown of two off-campus female hostels in Kano, citing issues related to student safety and a breakdown in moral and operational standards.
In an official statement issued on Monday, May 12, 2025, by Dr. Hamza Garba, the university’s Vice President of Campus Life, the institution announced the withdrawal of its approval for the use of the Al-Ansar Indabo hostels located in Hotoro and along UDB Road. The decision follows a series of reported violations of the school’s code of conduct.
Dr. Garba noted that the hostels were found to be in serious violation of the university’s guidelines on private student housing. He said that the hostels’ operations did not meet required standards for student welfare, particularly regarding safety, proper supervision, and acceptable behavior.
“I am directed by the management to write, inform, and bring to the attention of our esteemed parents and students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female students hostels located at UDB Road and Hotoro,” the statement read.
Dr. Garba further noted that numerous incidents were reported from the hostels, including “immoral behaviour, poor water and electricity supply, student violence, unauthorised movement at night, and the sharing of facilities with unknown tenants.” These infractions, according to him, posed serious risks to the health and security of students.
The university has instructed all students residing in the affected hostels to leave immediately after completing their current semester exams. Additionally, students have been warned not to return to the facilities for their own protection.
“Management is working closely with relevant security agencies to ensure total compliance with the directive,” the statement added.
