Former President is Dead

Former Uruguayan President Jose “Pepe” Mujica has passed away at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy that stretches far beyond politics. Mujica died on Tuesday following a long struggle with cancer, a condition he publicly acknowledged had worsened earlier this year.

In January 2025, Mujica shared that his illness had advanced to a point where he had decided to stop treatment. Known for his strong spirit and simple way of life, he continued to inspire many even in his final months.

Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi announced the news with deep sadness on X, formerly Twitter: “With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our comrade Pepe Mujica — president, activist, guide, and leader. We will miss you dearly, old friend.”

A former guerrilla who spent 13 years in prison during Uruguay’s military dictatorship, Mujica later became one of the country’s most beloved presidents.

He led the nation from 2010 to 2015 and was often referred to as “the world’s poorest president” for donating most of his salary to charity and choosing to live on a modest flower farm instead of the presidential palace.

He lived there with his wife, former Vice President Lucia Topolansky, and their beloved three-legged dog.

The Uruguayan government has declared three days of national mourning. Mujica’s body will lie in state at the legislative palace beginning Wednesday, allowing citizens to pay their respects. Supporters gathered in front of the Movement of Popular Participation (MPP) headquarters, waving flags and holding signs that read “Hasta siempre, viejo querido” — a tribute that translates to “Until forever, old friend.”
