Two people have been confirmed dead and many others are still missing following a violent outbreak at the border between Akwa Ibom and Cross River States. The incident took place on the morning of Monday, May 13, 2025, when unknown gunmen reportedly launched an attack on Oku Iboku, a community in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
According to residents, the attackers are suspected to have come from Ikot Offiong in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. They allegedly invaded the riverside community, targeting local fishermen, farmers, and residents going about their early morning routines. Boats were reportedly destroyed, homes abandoned, and some people remain unaccounted for as families search for their loved ones.
Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Kufre Abasi Edidem, raised the issue during a plenary session, urging immediate action to secure the troubled area. Edidem noted that the recurring clashes have caused deep fear among residents and disrupted livelihoods, especially for people who depend on farming and fishing for survival.
He called on the House to seek assistance from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and other relevant bodies to deliver urgent support to those affected. “He also urged the House to liaise with NEMA, SEMA and other agencies to provide relief materials to affected families.”
In response, the House of Assembly united in condemning the violent act. Speaker Udeme Otong noted the importance of protecting lives and property, stressing that the government must act quickly. He instructed the Clerk of the House to send a formal notification to the state government for immediate intervention.
As a longer-term measure, Edidem also proposed the establishment of a permanent Naval base in the border area, along with constant patrols by gunboats to deter future attacks and improve security.
